What is a mock-up or wireframe?
-
Mock-ups or wireframes are basic designs that sketch the
architectural layout of the key pages of a website,
intranet or extranet.
-
Mock-ups are not to be confused with graphic designs. Mock-ups make
clear which information goes where, not which colours to use or
whether to go for rounded edges or square ones.
-
A mock-up is a blueprint the web team can refer back to during the
making of the website, intranet or extranet.
Why is a mock-up so important?
-
Walk first. Then run. A mock-up is a first draft. You need to draft
before you can start designing the finished product.
-
A mock-up makes sure you know which information goes where before
you start writing the functional analysis or request for offer.
-
A mock-up can be used for user testing. Which means it's possible to
test your layout concept before you've written a single word of
code. Changes in the concept are easily and cheaply fixed.
How and when do you use a mock-up?
-
The first mock-up is a paper sketch.
-
Depending on what the mock-up will be used for, we use a tool to
make a clickable design or just do it in PhotoShop.
- We make mock-ups of:
- Homepage
- All page types (templates)
- All other crucial pages or features
Mock-ups can usually only be made after thorough preparatory research
and drawing up the information architecture of the website, intranet or
extranet. In some rare cases, we can start sketching
mock-ups straight away.
